Religious Education
Welcome to Religious Education (RE) at St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School
For information about how Religious Education is taught at our school, please see our curriculum map and RE Policy below and the West Sussex Agreed Syllabus which we follow. As a Church of England School, Religious Education is extremely important to us and taught by teachers as a core subject.
The school provides the teaching of RE to all children. Two thirds of the teaching is Christian (using the accredited Understanding Christianity materials) with a third of the curriculum time given to other religions and beliefs, which is in keeping with the ethos of the school. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from RE classes, although we would always recommend discussion with the Senior Leadership first if you have any concerns. Withdrawal from the subject is exceptionally rare and we hope that parents will choose not to withdraw their child from this very important subject.
Our RE Vision
We believe that Religious Education should inspire pupils to think deeply about the world around them and their relationship with it. RE lessons are an opportunity for children to explore their own beliefs as well as the beliefs and practices of major religions and world views in a creative and cross curricular way. Our RE teaching encourages children to discuss and reflect upon Big Questions and learn how to be respectful, tolerant and knowledgeable citizens.
