Music

Welcome to Music at St Nicolas and St Mary CE Primary School!

Here you will find our music curriculum map as well as music milestones detailing the journey our children make in music from year 1 to year 6. As a school, our passion for music is evident throughout any school day! The innovative and specialist teaching that all our pupils receive as part of the music learning journey means that children develop not only skills and knowledge in music but also an appreciation of the joy that music can bring.

Our Music Vision

Through the subject of music we want children to have access to a wide range of high quality music. We want to inspire all children to develop their full musical potential, to gain a range of musical skills and to enrich the rest of their lives with the enjoyment of music. In each year of their school life, children will experience whole-class high quality music tuition. During their time at school, children will learn drumming, keyboards, recorders, ukulele and singing, often taught by a specialist music teacher. They will be given opportunities to perform in a range of settings, from small concerts to large-scale assemblies and performances in the community. Children can attend music clubs such as recorder, harmonica, ‘Toots, Dudes and Flutes’, school band, St Nic’s singers and samba band. The school offers children the opportunity to attend one-to-one or small group tuition with peripatetic teachers in order to learn, for example, guitar, drum and keyboard. Using material from the New Model Music Curriculum, children will learn how to appreciate and understand music drawn from great composers and musicians and a range of different genres and traditions. We give children the opportunity to listen to and perform a variety of musical genres.
